The Arizona Diamondbacks made a series of roster moves Thursday, aimed at boosting their team during the final stretch of the 2024 regular season. They reinstated right-hander Ryne Nelson from the injured list and recalled outfielder Alek Thomas from Triple-A Reno. In corresponding moves, pitchers Yilber Diaz and Blake Walston were optioned to Reno following Wednesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants.
Ryne Nelson Returns from Injury
Ryne Nelson, who had been on the 15-day injured list since September 14 due to right shoulder inflammation, is back in the fold as the Diamondbacks look to secure a playoff berth. Nelson threw a successful 16-pitch bullpen session last weekend, showing no lingering issues from the injury. Prior to going on the IL, Nelson had been one of Arizona’s most consistent starters, posting a 3.16 ERA across 79.1 innings.
The right-hander’s return comes at a crucial time as Arizona prepares for its final regular-season series against the San Diego Padres. While Merrill Kelly is set to pitch Friday, the starting pitchers for Saturday and Sunday remain undecided. Nelson could be in the mix to either start or come out of the bullpen, depending on the team’s strategy.
Nelson’s second-half performance has been key to the Diamondbacks’ playoff push. Since the All-Star break, he’s pitched to a 3.39 ERA while striking out more than 27% of batters faced. His ability to return to form after this injury will be critical for Arizona’s postseason aspirations.
Alek Thomas Joins Crowded Outfield
Alek Thomas, who has been bouncing between the majors and Triple-A Reno this season, returns to the Diamondbacks’ outfield. After being sent down in mid-August, Thomas battled through an oblique injury that sidelined him until September 17. He impressed during his brief time back with the Aces, hitting .421/.500/.632 over five games before being recalled.
Despite his struggles earlier this season—hitting just .191 with three home runs and 17 RBIs in 37 games—Thomas is known for his elite defense and speed. He’ll provide Arizona with a defensive option in the outfield as they push for a playoff spot. However, he faces stiff competition for playing time, with outfielders Jake McCarthy, Corbin Carroll, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Randal Grichuk, and Pavin Smith all vying for starts.
Corresponding Moves: Yilber Diaz and Blake Walston Optioned
To make room on the roster for Nelson and Thomas, the Diamondbacks optioned pitchers Yilber Diaz and Blake Walston to Triple-A Reno. Both Diaz and Walston had short stints with the major league club, each contributing in various roles.
Diaz, who was called up on September 12, pitched in three games and recorded a solid 3.24 ERA. The right-hander had been one of Arizona’s top minor-league arms this season, posting a 3.22 ERA in Triple-A after being promoted from Double-A.
Walston, a left-hander, made two starts for Arizona earlier in the year before transitioning to a relief role. After returning in September, he struggled with consistency, allowing eight earned runs in four appearances. His ERA climbed to 7.94 in that stretch, prompting the Diamondbacks to send him back to Triple-A.
Diamondbacks’ Playoff Push
With three games remaining in the regular season, the Diamondbacks hold a slim lead in the National League Wild Card race. Currently one game ahead of the Atlanta Braves, Arizona controls its own playoff destiny. If they win out, they’ll secure a postseason spot regardless of other outcomes.
The team’s final series against the Padres will be critical. Merrill Kelly is set to start Friday, with Saturday and Sunday’s starters yet to be determined. Nelson’s return gives Arizona flexibility, while the outfield battle, including the return of Thomas, adds depth as the team prepares for a potential playoff run.
As the regular season winds down, Arizona’s ability to manage its pitching staff and outfield rotation will be key to locking in a postseason berth.
