Phoenix Rising Crushes San Antonio 4-0, Boosts Playoff Chances with Dominant Win

Phoenix Rising reasserted their dominance in a 4-0 victory over rival San Antonio FC, a decisive win that boosts their playoff chances. The two teams have built an intense rivalry, with the last meeting resulting in Phoenix’s former star, Manuel Arteaga, being ejected in the 13th minute, and a 2-1 loss for Rising. Earlier in the 2024 season, Phoenix also fell to San Antonio 2-1 in a July matchup.

Rising entered the game fresh off a disappointing 0-2 loss to Sacramento Republic FC, which snapped their streak of clean sheets. Meanwhile, San Antonio arrived with momentum, riding a two-game win streak after 1-0 victories against Monterey Bay and Oakland Roots. Both teams knew a win would significantly improve their playoff positions, making this match crucial.

Phoenix Strikes Early

From the start, both teams came out with high energy, but it was Phoenix that seized control. Pape Mar Boye set the tone early, powering in a header from a Charlie Dennis corner kick for the first goal of the night. Phoenix continued their aggressive play, and just 12 minutes later, Dariusz Formella doubled the lead with a brilliant goal. After cutting inside the box, Formella placed the ball perfectly into the net, notching his fifth goal of the season.

San Antonio Struggles to Respond

San Antonio came out stronger in the second half, but Phoenix remained unyielding. In the 65th minute, Charlie Dennis scored his first goal for Phoenix Rising, sending the ball into the lower corner, leaving San Antonio’s goalkeeper with no chance. The goal marked a special moment for Dennis and added to Phoenix’s mounting lead.

With the fans chanting for “one more goal,” Phoenix delivered again in the 84th minute. Damien Barker responded to the crowd’s call, finding the back of the net to seal the 4-0 victory. The fans erupted, celebrating a rare offensive explosion from Rising, who hadn’t scored multiple goals in a game since their 2-0 win over El Paso Locomotive on July 19.

The emphatic win reignited hope for Phoenix’s playoff run, as they finally showcased the offensive firepower that has eluded them for much of the season.

Coach Gomez Praises Team’s Performance

After the match, head coach Diego Gomez expressed his delight with the team’s offensive resurgence.

“I’m very happy with the guys,” said Gomez. “I think they did everything well, and we wanted to open the goal—especially for us.”

Phoenix faces a quick turnaround, with a tough schedule ahead. They travel to Orange County SC for a match on Wednesday, September 25, before returning home to face Las Vegas Lights FC on Saturday, September 28. Despite the tight schedule, Gomez remains confident in his team’s focus.

“They are focused,” Gomez stated. “Today let’s enjoy the 4-0 victory and celebrate with family.”

Playoff Hopes on the Rise

With the victory, Phoenix Rising now holds the 7th seed, securing a current spot in the 2024 USL Championship playoffs. However, with several matches remaining, Rising will need to maintain their momentum to hold onto their playoff position. Fans are hopeful the team can continue delivering high-scoring performances as the season winds down.

Phoenix’s next match will be crucial as they look to solidify their playoff status in a highly competitive field.
