Since taking over, Ishbia made it known to everyone in the NBA that he values winning and will spend an ungodly amount of money to keep the Suns competitive, and on Monday, he proved it again when the Phoenix Suns signed Grayson Allen into a $70M contract extension on Monday to keep the league’s top outside sniper this season for four more years.
For Allen, its hard to imagine that he even expected to be this good in his first year as a Sun. But make no mistake about it, he has become one of the most important players for the Suns.
Let’s take a look at some of the numbers that Grayson Allen produced this past season which certainly helped him earn the bag.
The Offense
A career 38.2% 3PT shooter prior to the 2023-2024 season, it wasn’t surprising that the Suns wanted him from the Bucks if they were to help them orchestrate a deal with the Trailblazers. The Suns needed shooters around the Big 3 to space the floor and punish defenders, and Grayson Allen was that guy.
Prior to the season, Allen boasted a career high 40% 3PT shooting in his two years with the Bucks.
The Suns getting Allen wasn’t popular at the time mainly because of his sustained “dirty player” reputation from his days with Duke, but as the season progressed, it became evident that he was just what the doctor ordered for the Suns.
To put Allen’s impact into perspective, here are some of Phoenix’s numbers that has something to do with him:
Suns win-loss record with Allen | 45-30 |
Suns win-loss record without Allen | 4-3 |
Suns win-loss record when Allen shot below 35% from three | 12-14 |
Suns win-loss record when Allen shot above 35% from three | 24-16 |
The Suns were 7-2 in April, with Allen shooting just 15% from deep in those two losses.
Obviously, Allen have the Big 3 to thank for his league-leading three point percentage as they demand defensive attention from the opposing teams, and shooting at a high clip, we would think that all Grayson does is just stand in the corner and wait for a pass out like the play below.
But Grayson Allen has shown that he can take the ball inside when given enough space and knock down some layups and floaters. Throughout the season, Allen drove the ball on average 5.6 times per game in the 73 games he did, and in a variety of ways, made 47% of his attempts.
The Defense
As good as Grayson Allen is in his role in the offense, he can as tough it up in the defensive side too. Allen is 17th in the league amongst guards with an average playing time of 30 mins with a defensive rating of 116.6, Anthony Edwards finished the season with the lowest rating of 109.5 in his 35.1 minutes.
While we cannot call him a defensive lock up guy, he certainly is a feisty defender with all the hustle points he provides.
In the stat above, Grayson Allen contests 2.3 3pt attempts per game and has the 3rd most contest per game overall. In both stat, he’s only trailing a superstar who is at his age, still one of the better defenders in the league, and Nurk, who’s there because he’s big and is rightfully so, doing his job.
In short, the Phoenix Suns made a great move extending Allen for four more years to play in the Valley. A good role guy who can still get better. For Grayson, this should be a thrilling situation for him as he never had more than two seasons with one team in his six-year career.
