The Phoenix Suns have brought back a familiar face, signing veteran big man Frank Kaminsky to a training camp deal. Kaminsky, 31, is rejoining the Suns, where he previously played from 2019-2022, and will compete for a roster spot ahead of the 2024-25 NBA season.
Kaminsky’s Second Stint in Phoenix
After a year playing overseas in Serbia, Kaminsky returns to Phoenix with the hopes of reestablishing himself in the NBA. The Suns will open training camp on October 1 at their practice facility, and Kaminsky will be battling to secure the final roster spot as a reserve stretch big.
Kaminsky had a solid three-season run with the Suns, averaging 8.2 points on 46.8% shooting, along with 4.3 rebounds in 95 games. Notably, he played a key role during the Suns’ 2021 NBA Finals run. However, a right knee injury in the 2021-22 season limited him to just nine games, and he was waived late in the regular season.
Despite his injury struggles, Kaminsky showed flashes of his potential, averaging 10.6 points on a career-best 54.5% shooting before his season was cut short.
Recent NBA and Overseas Experience
Following his time in Phoenix, Kaminsky split the 2022-23 NBA season between the Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks. However, his playing time was limited, and he posted career-lows, averaging 2.5 points across 36 games. Last season, Kaminsky took his talents to Europe, where he made his debut with Partizan in Serbia. He averaged 9.1 points and 3.3 rebounds in 15 minutes per game, showcasing his scoring ability in both the ABA Liga and EuroLeague competitions.
Competing for a Roster Spot
Kaminsky joins a Suns roster currently filled with 14 of the 15 available spots. He will compete for the final position, along with two other forwards—Mamadi Diakite and Moses Wood—who have also signed training camp deals with Phoenix.
Diakite, 26, brings experience from four NBA seasons, appearing in 55 games across five teams. The forward was part of the 2021 Milwaukee Bucks championship team under Suns’ head coach Mike Budenholzer and spent time last season in the NBA G League. Diakite averaged 14.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks in 18 G League games with the Westchester Knicks and Austin Spurs.
Wood, 24, impressed during the 2024 NBA Summer League, playing for the Atlanta Hawks. Throughout his college career, spanning multiple schools, including Washington, UNLV, and Tulane, Wood averaged 10.5 points and 4.8 rebounds in 157 games. Now, he has a chance to make his NBA debut.
Suns Ready for the Season
The Suns enter the upcoming season with high expectations, following a strong offseason that saw several key roster moves. With Kaminsky, Diakite, and Wood competing for the final roster spots, Phoenix will aim to finalize their squad before the regular season kicks off on October 23 against the Los Angeles Clippers.
